This document describes how to upgrade an existing installation of Discovery Accelerator to version 10.0.1.
See the ReadMeFirst file and Installation Guide for information on the following:
The ReadMeFirst file is included as DAReadMeFirst_en.htm on
the release media. The Installation Guide is in the Documentation
folder on the release media.
For information on the new features and fixes contained in version 10.0.1,
see the Symantec Discovery Accelerator™
10.0.1 document. This is included as DAUpdates_en.htm on the
release media.
For the latest information on supported devices and versions of software, see the Enterprise Vault Compatibility Charts (http://www.symantec.com/docs/TECH38537).
You can upgrade to Discovery Accelerator 10.0.1 from the following versions only:
For the latest information on supported upgrade paths, see the technical note called Supported upgrade paths for Enterprise Vault, Compliance Accelerator, and Discovery Accelerator (http://www.symantec.com/docs/TECH53174).
If you install the Discovery Accelerator server software on a separate server from your normal Enterprise Vault installation, you must install the Enterprise Vault software on the Discovery Accelerator server. As a minimum, you require a 9.0 or 10.0 version of one of the following:
Note the following important points about the version of Enterprise Vault that you install on the Discovery Accelerator server:
All Enterprise Vault servers in all Enterprise Vault sites in a Discovery Accelerator environment must run the same version of Enterprise Vault. For example, when using Discovery Accelerator with two Enterprise Vault installations, you cannot have one site that runs Enterprise Vault 9.0 and another that runs Enterprise Vault 10.0.
The major version of Discovery Accelerator must be the same as, or one later than, the major version of Enterprise Vault. For example, you can run Discovery Accelerator 10.0 with Enterprise Vault 9.0 servers, but you cannot run Discovery Accelerator 9.0 with Enterprise Vault 10.0 servers.
If the major version of Discovery Accelerator is the same as the major version of Enterprise Vault, the minor version (Service Pack) of Discovery Accelerator must be the same as, or later than, the minor version of Enterprise Vault. For example, you can run Discovery Accelerator 10.0.1 with Enterprise Vault 10.0.0 servers, but you cannot run Discovery Accelerator 10.0.0 with Enterprise Vault 10.0.1.
See the Compatibility Charts for more information about supported versions.
Before you upgrade to Discovery Accelerator 10.0.1, we recommend that you do the following:
Check for and stop any active searches, export runs, and production runs. In the following article on the Symantec Enterprise Support site, steps 4 and 6 provide SQL scripts with which you can check for these operations:
Check for searches that have a status of either "Pending Acceptance" or "Pending Acceptance (with errors)", and accept or reject them. In the above article on the Symantec Enterprise Support site, step 5 provides a SQL script with which you can check for these searches. By accepting or rejecting the searches, you can reduce the amount of data that the upgrade procedure must process.
Check the tblSearchResults table of the Discovery Accelerator customer database for rows that have been left over by searches that you have already accepted or rejected. To do this, run the following SQL query against the customer database:
SELECT COUNT(*) FROM tblSearchResults
If the query returns any result other than 0, and no searches are currently running, then you must clear the table of invalid data before you proceed. Contact the Symantec Support team for assistance.
On the Discovery Accelerator server, use the Services snap-in to Microsoft Management Console to stop the Enterprise Vault Accelerator Manager service. This service can interfere with the upgrade process if you leave it running.
Use the facilities in SQL Server Management Studio to do the following:
Consult the documentation that accompanies SQL Server Management Studio for instructions on how to perform these activities.
If you use Microsoft SQL Server database mirroring with your Discovery Accelerator databases, remove it before you upgrade the Discovery Accelerator server software. Discovery Accelerator fails to upgrade its databases if mirroring is configured. For more information, see the following article on the Symantec Enterprise Support site:
Disable the following features on the Discovery Accelerator server, Enterprise Vault servers, and all SQL Servers that host an Enterprise Vault database or Discovery Accelerator database:
Article TECH63230 on the Symantec Enterprise Support site provides instructions on how to disable these features.
Upgrading a Discovery Accelerator database that contains millions of items can take several hours to complete. During the upgrade process there are several pauses that may give you the impression that it has stopped prematurely. We recommend that you perform the upgrade at a quiet time and allow it to run through to completion. Ideally, seek the assistance of Symantec Consulting Services when upgrading.
See the Installation Guide for more information on how to perform the following steps.
To upgrade your system to Discovery Accelerator 10.0.1
If you have also upgraded your Enterprise Vault environment, upgrade the Enterprise Vault components on your Discovery Accelerator server to match the other Enterprise Vault servers in the site.
See the documentation that accompanies Enterprise Vault for guidelines on how to upgrade it.
Symantec
Enterprise Vault Discovery Accelerator Server_language.msi).IMPORTANT Follow the on-screen instructions to restart the Enterprise Vault Accelerator Manager service. You can use the Services snap-in to Microsoft Management Console to do this.
Do not skip this step, as you may experience problems if you do.
To upgrade each customer database, follow these steps:
Use the Accelerator Manager Web site to re-upload the Discovery Accelerator report templates to your SQL reporting server.
Discovery Accelerator 10.0.1 includes some updates to existing report templates. To make the updated templates available, you must upload them to your reporting server.
If you have not previously done so, use the Accelerator Manager Web site to set up Custodian Manager.
Custodian Manager is a browser-based application with which you can store the details of the "custodians" (individual employees) and custodian groups for which you want to search with Discovery Accelerator. A custodian group is any collection of employees, such as Windows or Domino groups and distribution lists, Active Directory or Domino LDAP searches, and Active Directory containers. After you have added the custodians and custodian groups to Custodian Manager, you can pick from them when you define the criteria for a Discovery Accelerator search.
To set up Custodian Manager, follow these steps:
Enter your preferred IIS and SQL database details, and then click OK.
Use the online Help to assist you, if necessary.
Install the Discovery Accelerator client software on the computer of each user who will be running the client. The Discovery Accelerator release media include two packages with which you can install the client software on your users' computers:
.msi) package. One advantage of using the MSI installer package is that it lets you install the client software on a per-user or per-machine basis, whereas ClickOnce installations are on a per-user basis only. On the other hand, ClickOnce provides the ease of deployment of Web applications and makes it simple to distribute updates to the Discovery Accelerator client.
IMPORTANT The version of the client software that you install on your users' computers must exactly match that of the Discovery Accelerator server software on the Discovery Accelerator server.
